From Friday 28th June, a new mana whenua Māori artwork called Waimahara will be open in Myers Park, Tāmaki Makaurau (Auckland CBD). Like the Te Waihorotiu stream, the artwork is alive. It responds to the environment and to visitors’ participation. Below, you can learn the Waimahara/Waiora waiata – specifically composed for this artwork – and then sing the waiata onsite to activate light & sound responses.

Behind the scenes at Roundhead Studios
In April of 2023, composers Taru mai-i-tawhiti Kerehoma-Hoani, Tuirina Wehi and Moeahi Kerehoma assembled a talented group of vocalists to record the two waiata that would become the key to unlocking the audio and visual responses of the Waimahara artwork. Recorded at Auckland’s ROUNDHEAD STUDIOS owned by Neil Finn (Split Enz / Crowded House) and produced by Justyn Pilbrow, click play below to catch a glimpse behind the scenes at how Waimahara was recorded.
